This year the Salesian community of Moshi picked the theme ?community called to love and care,? On the 18^th and 19^th of November the Salesian family in Moshi celebrated the community day in style. The most interesting event was when different groups were showing appreciation to the vice rector Fr. Bruno who took the place of the rector, Fr. Tembo, who was absent because he went for a seminar in Nairobi. The item by the brothers from Sri Lanka was a masterpiece.

Picnic at Lake Chala

The Moshi Salesian Community had a picnic at Lake Chala. This was a beautiful occasion to come together as brothers. The picnic came prior to the community day and was a way to show our unity and friendship in the community. The picnic was a silent but eloquent witness, to the fact that for us Salesians to live and work together is a fundamental requirement and a sure way of fulfilling our vocations. Tri-Monthly Recollection

At the beginning of the month of November the community had Tri-monthly recollection. Recollection is a moment to ponder upon our lives. There is a risk there we may spend time gathering ideas in the post novitiate and yet the most important things is to gather our lives. Moments like retreats and recollections are platforms to examine our lives, because an unexamined life is not worth living.

Moshi New Academic Year

The Salesian post novices in Moshi began the new academic year last month. Prior to the inaugural function, we had an annual retreat in Maua. The retreat was preached by Fr. Paul Felix sdb, it was indeed a renewing experience. After the retreat the second years renewed their vows in a beautiful ceremony in our community in Moshi. The Provincial of AFE province, Fr. Gianni Roland, availed himself on this special day of renewal. In August the first years from various provinces of Asia and Africa joined our community. The students are from in eleven countries. It is a beautiful experience of unity in diversity. We have Christ and Don Bosco as our common denominators. When the first years joined us we had seminars for one week, the seminars were arranged according to class. All will agree with me that the seminars were thought provoking. Now the mental gymnastics are in full swing. All are making their efforts to be good Salesians and to have a holistic development, in preparation for the mission.

18th GRADUATION CEREMONY

A day after the oral comprehensive exam, we had a graduation ceremony at Don Bosco Moshi. The following are the fourteen graduates, Mr. Josephat Maleli and Brs David Njolo, Prosperly Mwila, Anthony Kalubaloshi, Willem Mukuve, Christopher Sharpe, Chege Erastus, Nicodemus Orioki, Dominic Kamau, Kenneth Omondi, Peter Nyaanga, Peter Muia, Lawrence Oluoch and Josephat Orota. All the fourteen are unique but special. As we say congrats and bye to them, we know that we will miss them because they made a difference in our lives.

Some people come into our lives and are soon forgotten. Others come into our lives and leave footprints in our hearts that can never be forgotten. The fourteen gentlemen will never be forgotten.

COMPREHENSIVE EXAM

On Friday the 20^th of May the third years at Don Bosco College Moshi had their philosophy oral comprehensive exam. This was preceded by the philosophy written exam and education written exam. The fourteen third years were harvesting what they had labored for in three years. It reminded me of the Psalm which reads, they go out they go out full of tears, carrying the seeds for the sowing, they come back they come back, full of song?

Now that the third years are done with their philosophy exams, they are getting ready for the exam of life in their practical training. We keep them in our hearts and prayers.

The postnovices in Don Bosco Moshi, have apostolate every Sunday. Each one is appointed to a different oratory or school. Among all these apostolate there is also a reach out program. The reach out team for this year had a wonderful time reaching out to the young in various schools in the Kilimanjaro region. The team was comprised of Fr Paul Nyaga, Brs Raphael Bhembe, Vernon Lushibashi, Walter Obiye, Anthony Achondo, Chongo Lupupa and Joackim Mzanywa. It was indeed an enriching experience of sharing with the young. As bearers of God?s love for the young, we tried to bring Christ to the young and the young to Christ.

MOSHI DEBATE 2011

On the 26^th of April all roads in Moshi led to Don Bosco Seminary for the annual debate. Many a student from various schools poured in for the intellectual wrestling. The motion of the debate was, ?Africa cannot develop without foreign innervation.? The panels were made up of students from our college the likes of David Njolo, Joseph Chifundo, Irvin Lumano, Chongo Lupupa, Christopher Kole, Raphael Bhembe, Nicodemus Orioki and Peter Nyaanga. These thinkers left people thinking. They were indeed thought provoking. It is not an overblown statement to say that it was a clash of the giants.

After the first three speakers from both the proposing and opposing sides there was a floor discussion whereby the members of the august house were free to oppose or propose. The competition was stiff and both sides of the argument were convincing. The judges were at a loss, but at the end they just had to make a decision and the opposers won by a margin of one point. The annual debate at Don Bosco College is always a day to remember.

COMMUNITY PICNIC

The Moshi community went for a picnic in Machame where we spent the time together as a community web in love. It was a chance for each one to say to himself, ?I am because we are and since we are therefore I am.? The picnic was indeed a chance to be a brother among brothers, there is no doubt that the community enjoyed the picnic as it was all smiles all over.

What struck me most is the incident when it started raining and yet we had a small tent and one land cruiser to shield us from the rain; funny enough we all fit in these two hiding places. It was an opportunity to be close to one another, neither by choice nor by chance, but providence ordained it to be so. We spent the time playing chess, scrabble, draft and chatting. Even after the rain subsided the confrere still enjoyed each other’s company. Towards evening we filed into the bus as we had to catch up with the preparations for the annual debate which would be on the morrow.

DBYTC VS MCF

There was a thrilling debate between Mama Clementina Foundation and Don Bosco Youth Training Centre. The motion read, “Some African Cultures Should be Eradicated.” DBYTC was proposing while MCF was opposing. It was indeed a clash of the giants, where each student tried to face argument with a stronger argument. I was delighted to see how the young people are talented in debate. For sure deep down each of us, is a sleeping giant waiting to be woken up. Wake up the giant in you.
